PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Hall Director position allows for great professional development within the job description itself. Once you master the basics, you are encouraged to get involved in division or university service as well as regional or national involvement. Professional development plans are created in conjunction with your supervisor and each Hall Director has received funding, depending on divisional funding and departmental needs.

MEAL
PLAN

We realize connections with students or colleagues often happen over a cup of coffee or a good meal. Each Hall Director is provided $1,000 per semester to use at all of our on-campus eateries. Our dining services team works hard to offer healthy, locally sourced, sustainable options to allow for variety and unique offerings throughout campus.

TUITION REMISSION

While it may seem right now like you would never want to take another class, that may change someday! If you are interested in taking classes to brush up on old skills, learn new ones, or even explore new career opportunities, our tuition remission program for employees and family members will set you up for success. Current and former Res Life team members have taken classes in the MBA program, sports management, learned more about Human Resources, as well as many others options!

STUDENT-CENTERED
DECISION MAKING

Students are at the center of our work and whenever possible, are at the center of our decision making. Hall Directors are expected to get to know their residents beyond a name on a roster and we make every effort to center decisions around major departmental processes and procedures so they make sense for where students are in their development. Feedback is welcome, often solicited, and impacts future decisions.

ALTERNATIVE
BREAK TRIPS

Our completely student-run Alternative Break trips offer students and staff alike the opportunity to put our mission into practice to be in community with marginalized populations throughout the country. Hall Directors are encouraged to serve as Staff Companions and are not required to take vacation days, as we realize the act of accompaniment is a key component of our Jesuit mission.

STAFF APARTMENTS

When you are a live-in professional, your home should be your sanctuary. We try to provide comfortable, spacious apartments to make your apartment a home. All but one staff apartment has two bedrooms, all but two have exterior entrances, and all of them come furnished with furniture bought at furniture stores in the community, not student furniture pulled from storage. When you live where you work, where you live should be comforting and relaxing.

PET POLICY

One of the best ways we have found to help staff transition to full-time employment is to provide a generous pet policy. We allow 1-2 cats or one dog under 55 pounds to live with you in your staff apartment. Students and RAs love when Hall Directors have pets and it will likely be the first question they ask when you come for your on-campus interview! Pets are family at Xavier and we know it is an easy way to help with work-life balance and emotional support. Learn more about our pets in the staff bio section!

PRIVATE
LAUNDRY

Nothing makes you feel more like a student than doing your laundry in the common laundry room or paying for it with quarters, not to mention the sometimes awkward interactions with residents while folding your towels. This is why all Hall Directors have in-unit laundry in their private apartments.

FREE,
RESERVED PARKING

If you're like many of us, spending extra money out of each check just to park on campus isn't high on your priority list. All employees at Xavier have free parking on campus and our Hall Directors have reserved spots right next to their respective communities. No more catching a bus across campus or circling a lot for 30 minutes just trying to find a spot.

DISCOUNTED TICKETS & MEMBERSHIPS

Xavier offers many opportunities to purchase highly discounted tickets to local theater shows, Cincinnati Zoo events, or on-campus events and games. With a men's basketball team consistently ranked in the top 20 nationally, tickets are in high demand, but easily accessible for Xavier faculty and staff. Catch a game, catch a show, and show off our campus and city to your family and friends the next time they are in town!

PAID TEACHING
OPPORTUNITIES

One great professional development opportunity is to teach a first-year introduction to college course after your first year of employment. This paid position allows you to connect with first-year students outside of your normal role and get paid while doing it! 12 classes during the first six weeks of each semester allow you to build your professional skills and make some additional money!

Unique Departmental Features

Our department has some unique aspects which help to reflect our mission and values.

Check out some of ours below!

operationalize care

On a small, mission-driven campus, we expect a lot from our on-call staff. This means you are often going in-person to help students and we do ask professional staff to go with students to the hospital who experience mental health concerns or major health issues. Therefore, the Leadership Team works hard at something we call "operationalizing care." This means we don't just say, "Take some time when you need it! Don't forget about self-care!" because we know we hire high-achievers who often to not like to ask for help. Therefore, we structure duty to make sure not just students, but also our professional staff are cared for in how we structure the schedule. HDs are on duty for one day at a time during the week and when you are on duty on the weekends, it is the expectation that you do not come into work until 1pm on Monday. Catch up on sleep, do your laundry, or run some errands, it's up to you!
